Mechanical, Civil & Industrial Engineering Expert
For engineers who know which assumption makes a reasonable-looking answer unsafe or unbuildable.
What you would do
- Write problems on loads, materials, thermal systems and structures, such as sizing a beam to a stated deflection limit, with reference answers.
- Find the unsafe or wrong assumption in a model’s engineering answer, such as a missing load case or the wrong safety factor.
- Write operations and scheduling problems, such as a critical-path schedule or a production-line bottleneck, with checkable answers.
- Judge whether a model’s design could actually be built, shipped and maintained.
- Write rubrics that check units, codes and standards, safety factors and constraints.
What we look for
The minimum
- You study at or graduated from a college or university in mechanical, civil, industrial or a related engineering field.
- A design, analysis or build project you did yourself and can explain in depth, numbers included.
- Solid fundamentals in your area, such as statics and strength of materials, thermodynamics and fluids, or operations research.
- Care with safety margins, standards and real-world constraints.
Ideal
- A degree in the field; a master’s or PhD, or a PE license, is even better.
- Professional engineering or operations work, especially at an AI lab or AI company.
- Working knowledge of the codes and standards in your area, such as building codes or ASME standards.
- Built projects, publications or patents.
How the work runs
- Task size
- Tasks take about 30 minutes to 5 hours. Each one shows its estimated time and price before you start, and you are paid that price even if it takes you more or less time.
- Pay
- Per task accepted in review: its estimated time times the project’s rate. A task estimated at 2 hours at $120 an hour pays $240. Accepted tasks are paid within 30 days.
- Hours
- Projects last 1 month to a year. Each sets a weekly minimum, usually about 20 hours of estimated work, and you choose when you work.
- Tools and review
- Your own computer, plus CAD, FEA, a spreadsheet or Python for calculations when a task calls for them. Every task is reviewed against the project’s written quality standard before it is accepted.
