Mathematics & Statistics Expert
For mathematicians and statisticians who can write a problem with one right answer, and show why it is right.
What you would do
- Write original problems with a single checkable answer and a full worked solution, such as a counting problem whose answer is one exact integer.
- Grade model proofs step by step and mark the first wrong step, such as an inequality applied in the wrong direction.
- Review statistical claims for invalid inference, such as stopping a test early or running many comparisons without a correction.
- Check model derivations numerically, for example by testing a closed form against a quick simulation.
- Write rubrics that give credit for a correct method, not just a matching final answer.
What we look for
The minimum
- You study at or graduated from a college or university in mathematics, statistics or a related field.
- Proof, analysis or modeling work you did yourself and can explain step by step, such as a thesis, a research project or a hard problem you solved and wrote up.
- You write clear proofs and can find the gap in someone else’s argument.
- Care with assumptions, edge cases and notation.
Ideal
- A degree in mathematics or statistics; a master’s or PhD is even better.
- Research, teaching at university level or professional quantitative work, especially at an AI lab or AI company.
- Publications, or national or international competition results such as the Putnam or an olympiad.
- Fluency in LaTeX and in a computing tool such as Python, R or Mathematica.
How the work runs
- Task size
- Tasks take about 30 minutes to 5 hours. Each one shows its estimated time and price before you start, and you are paid that price even if it takes you more or less time.
- Pay
- Per task accepted in review: its estimated time times the project’s rate. A task estimated at 2 hours at $110 an hour pays $220. Accepted tasks are paid within 30 days.
- Hours
- Projects last 1 month to a year. Each sets a weekly minimum, usually about 20 hours of estimated work, and you choose when you work.
- Tools and review
- Your own computer, LaTeX for writing math, and Python, R or a similar tool for checking numbers. Every task is reviewed against the project’s written quality standard before it is accepted.
