Electrical & Computer Engineering Expert
For engineers who can tell a design that simulates correctly from one that works on a real board.
What you would do
- Write power-electronics and analog design problems, such as sizing a buck converter to a ripple spec, with a worked reference answer and a rubric.
- Grade model answers on topology, stability, timing and real-world constraints, such as a control loop with too little phase margin.
- Write digital design tasks in Verilog or VHDL with testbenches that expose corner-case bugs, such as a FIFO that fails when it fills up.
- Review embedded firmware, such as an interrupt handler or a sensor driver, for race conditions and timing bugs.
- Write signal-processing and control problems, such as designing a filter to a stated attenuation, with checkable answers.
- Judge whether a design that works in simulation would survive tolerances, noise and temperature on a real board.
What we look for
The minimum
- You study at or graduated from a college or university in electrical or computer engineering or a related field.
- A circuit, board, chip, firmware or system project you built yourself and can explain in depth.
- Core skills in at least two areas, such as circuit analysis, digital logic, signals and systems or embedded C.
- Attention to tolerances, margins and failure modes.
Ideal
- A degree in electrical or computer engineering; a master’s or PhD is even better.
- Professional design, test or firmware work, especially at an AI lab or AI company.
- Hands-on lab skill: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and bringing up a new board.
- Products, publications or patents others rely on.
How the work runs
- Task size
- Tasks take about 30 minutes to 5 hours. Each one shows its estimated time and price before you start, and you are paid that price even if it takes you more or less time.
- Pay
- Per task accepted in review: its estimated time times the project’s rate. A task estimated at 2 hours at $130 an hour pays $260. Accepted tasks are paid within 30 days.
- Hours
- Projects last 1 month to a year. Each sets a weekly minimum, usually about 20 hours of estimated work, and you choose when you work.
- Tools and review
- Your own computer, plus a circuit simulator such as SPICE, an HDL simulator, or Python or MATLAB when a task calls for them. Every task is reviewed against the project’s written quality standard before it is accepted.
